DER WILLE ZUR MACHT

Things tend to not happen unless you make them happen.

This is great if you're a highly motivated and energetic person. Perhaps not so much if you're prone to apathy or are just plain indecisive. Regardless of all that, when I look back at the great events in my life (thus far, at least), I see a clearly defined root cause: I made them happen. I put forth the time, effort, and energy to affect my surroundings, and changed some tiny portion of my life. Obviously there are no guarantees, and I'm not claiming to have a level of influence that goes beyond my personal sphere, lingering into the region of, say, world peace, or a system ensuring that fast food orders are consistently prepared correctly (and we both know which of the two is going to get solved last).

Point is, you need to swing the bat; or pop the question; or book the trip; or write the novel, etc, etc. Sitting on the couch accomplishes none of these things, unless of course your goal in life can be accomplished from the safety of our couch, in which case, more power to you. For the other 99% of the world, you gotta get moving.

It was an arduous and unpleasant year, but I've made some things happen. Good things, quite arguably, and ones that will keep my soul lit throughout the rest of my days. It is neither wise nor productive to measure each moment for some feigned illusion of progress. Likewise, most people don't realize what they are capable of.

To quote Silent Bob in that one movie that didn't totally suck: "Bitch, do something."
